Gudran began a program of sanitation awareness by holding group sessions with some doctors who have clinics around El Max. Unfortunately, these first efforts did not yield strong results. Gudran then hosted some doctors in an artistic work camp and helped them to get acquainted with the people of the area. This experience sparked some doctors’ interest in the issue and therefore, they decided to help the community through research about common local diseases.
The Fishermen village of El Max suffers from some area-specific diseases such as skin diseases as a result of dealing with fishing nets, chest allergies among children caused by high humidity, and also, kidney disease. “
Quoted from a medical report by Dr. Mohamed Monsour and Dr. Ingy Ali (both volunteers in Gudran).
The program of sanitation awareness has developed to include house visits as a means of giving instructions and to include family meetings to overcome discomfort about certain health issues. There is a young woman working among the sanitation instructors to help with gender specific issues.
