Cafes are considered as the informal spaces for all categories of the society to get together, especially youth. With the increasing rate of unemployment among youth of all social classes and qualifications, not only in Egypt but all over the world as well, the number of youth sitting on cafes has increased also. In general, cafes provide youth with an open
space for dialogue, where they can discuss their personal matters and the public affairs as well as gaining much amount of their culture and knowledge. All this has attracted our attention to this space, the café, which, if it is exploited in a different way, can activate the artistic efforts of those youth and sharpen their creative potentials.
It can also be used to establish and root the principles of social peace
in themselves. On the other hand cafes can be as new spaces for young artists to develop their artistic practice and to activate their social responsibility. Besides, the café can be used as a tribune for discussing several social causes that overshadow youth’s life currently.
Gudran and the Café
Gudran works on activating a group of different artistic programs which can be presented in some cafes in downtown of Alexandria. Our aim is to activate the potentials of young attendants, to create a space for young artists to present their artistic experiments in informal places open to the street with all its variables.
The Café is an informal social space open to the street, with the potential of exploiting the abilities of youth positively.
From 2006 to 2007, Gudran worked on attracting the attention of attendants, young artists and cafes owners to the importance of the idea and its economic profits; by organizing several artistic activities especially arts of performance like music, theatre and telling tales.
